1. The Blessing of the Shofar:

The Torah (Numbers 10:6-8) mentions two different sounds, the teki'ah a long breath, and teru'ah, sound shorter. Since the rabbis did not know exactly what the teru'ah was raised two possibilities: the shevarim, broken sounds like a groan, and teruah, a clamor of nine staccato notes. Both are used today.
Therefore, the blowing of the Shofar follows a prescribed pattern. It consists of three series of explosions, each consisting of three replications of three notes. The various notes of the shofar is blown to the following:
Tekiah - "one long blast"
Shevarim - " 3 broken blows"
Teruah - "9 notes stocato"
Tekiah G'dolah - "great blast"

2. Lighting of the Candles
With anticipation for the coming Shabbat we light the candles before sundown. In the strictest sense, we are instructed not to kindle a fire on Shabbat. It's nice to begin this part of the Blessings in those last moments before Shabbat to make the most of our time in celebration with our Father. Dim the other lights of the room and light the candles with "pomp and circumstance". After they are lit, gaze into the flame to ponder the solemnity of the words about to be said. Enjoy the glowing warmth and peace from the candles, as this is a symbolic glimpse at the essence of Shabbat. Encircle the flame three times with your hands and arms, covering your eyes after the last pass; then recite the words of the blessing:
